Mr. Bill Lamb, Principal
May 25, 2007
Dear Junior Parents,
At the May 17th meeting, the Board of
Education approved a change in the way graduation honors (valedictorian and
salutatorian) will be determined.
For the class of 2008, valedictorian and salutatorian honors will be
determined by an evaluation of graded scores in all classes. Students who have received equivalent top
scores in equivalent classes will be candidates for these graduation
honors. This transitionary
method may likely result in multiple valedictorians and/or salutatorians. G.P.A. will continue to be calculated, for
this year only, for percentile rankings, such as top 50%, top 10%, etc.
Beginning with the class of 2009 – All classes will transition to a new method for
computing class rank. Starting with the
class of 2009, all class rankings will be calculated using the Accumulated
Grade Points. This change in
calculations will reward those students who take more classes and receive
higher grades.
Grade Point Averaging (G.P.A.) will continue to be
calculated in future years, as some colleges and insurance companies utilize
this information often, but it will not determine class rank.
Example of Accumulated
Grade Points:
“A” grades earn 4 points, and “B” grades earn 3 points, etc.
A report card with grades of A, A,
A, B, C, would earn
4 + 4 + 4 + 3 + 2 =17 grade points.
These points would be accumulated for all four years of high school. The student(s) with the highest accumulation of
points at graduation would be the class valedictorian.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any
questions.
Sincerely,
Bill Lamb
