Looping

What is Looping?         Looping is an instructional process where the teacher stays with the same group of students for a 2-year period.   This process is also known as multi-year; teacher retention and teacher-student progression.
What are the advantages to Looping?
  • The year starts out at day 181 instead of day 1 since the teacher already knows the strengths and weaknesses.
  • Bond formed between the child and the teacher is strong.
  • Bond formed between parent and teacher is strong.
  • Fewer discipline problems because expectations are already set.
  • Less anxiety for students
  • Fewer absences leading to higher attendance rates
  • Provides the consistency that is needed by students
Are there disadvantages to Looping?        Yes----Personality conflicts play a role in the process.  You will need to be very up front with parents and let them know that they have an options of not continuing in the loop.  Teachers have to be willing to learn two separate curriculum for each grade level.  Although there are disadvantages to looping the advantages far outweigh these.
